Karate Demo & Taster for St Bega's CE School

Last week, A small team of our members travelled to St Bega's CE School in Eskdale to give a karate demo and taster session to their kids.

St Bega's is only a small school compared to most around the area, but we were given a fantastic welcome nonetheless and it was an pleasure to spend the morning with such a bunch of wonderful children!

We began by giving a very brief introduction to traditional karate, where it comes from and a little about the classes we offer around West Cumbria. We also mentioned the fact that martial arts is based heavily on mutual respect and to illustrate this, we started our demonstration with the formal etiquette and opening salutation. 

Our demonstration covered basic striking, kicking and receiving techniques, followed by a selection of kata (forms) to show how specific techniques may be linked together. We then showed some of these techniques in application and on pads. We finished off by showing some light sparring and then some board breaking before asking if the children at St Bega's would like to give karate a try. We certainly weren't short of volunteers!

We took the kids through our traditional kneeling bow, how to form a fist, one of our basic stances and then introduced them to our most fundamental striking technique, Choku-Zuki (straight thrust). We practiced slowly at first before ramping up the speed to see if we could spot any potential karate talent in the school! We also added our karate shout (Kiai) to really help raise the energy in the room.

We were not disappointed - everyone took part with a very positive attitude and judging by the smiles around the room afterwards, the children seemed to really enjoy the experience :-)
