On Saturday 7th May 2016, two dojo members were honoured with our prestigious Student of the Year Award and now take their place in our Hall of Fame. Owen Hughes (12) from Workington and Sophie Cullen (18) from Whitehaven were chosen following a dedicated student poll, plus ongoing assessment by senior members and instructors. They were both formally presented with commemorative plaques by founder and chief instructor of E.S.K.K® Martial Arts & Fitness, Chris Denwood. Chris said, "These awards are very important to us because they acknowledge individuals who consistently show a variety of inspiring qualities that make them great ambassadors for the group. Plus as the decision process is influenced by all our members, it makes these accolades even more special." Owen and Sophie have been dojo members for just over three years and since that time have grown a keen interest for the art of traditional karate. They are very passionate about training and openly share their enthusiasm with fellow class-mates. Owen is now aiming for his Brown Belt rank and Sophie is working towards the coveted Black Belt, with aspirations to become a future dojo instructor. Sophie said, “Since my time with the group I’ve had so many amazing experiences with some of the best and most inspirational people I’ve ever met. To be chosen as Student of the Year is an honour I never thought I would receive so I want to say a huge thank you to everyone for their kind support”. As part of the awards ceremony, a local and national charity were also selected to receive a sizeable donation from our Community Fund. The two charities chosen were St. Bees R.N.L.I and Great North Air Ambulance. We will announce further details about this soon!
