Health & Fitness
During the application of the normal activities we chose to perform in our everyday lives, our bodies are manipulated in all sorts of ways. We may walk, run, jump, lift, push, pull, bend, twist and turn with a huge degree of variance. These human actions do not only depend on single muscle groups acting in isolation, but rather, are made up of many sophisticated compound relationships between our muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.
It is the brain that ultimately controls muscular movement, so we must learn to engage this in the correct way if we wish to perform to our best ability.
We know from science that the brain thinks of whole motions, rather than isolated muscles, therefore when we train singular joint actions as in many common ‘gym strategies’ found today, we are not adequately simulating what would be challenged in reality.
The term 'functional fitness' is used to describe training strategies that place a greater priority on training movements, as opposed to simply training muscles. Muscles are stimulated for development because of the ‘support function’ they provide to the overall movement, i.e. they’re responsible for driving the structure of the body to result in the desired physical motion.
E.S.K.K® Martial Arts & Fitness has a range of fitness classes to take part in and benefit from every week that help to greatly improve total body strength, endurance, flexibility, stability, posture, metabolism, mental tenacity and joint mobility. These classes, combined with a sensible diet plan can help transform you into the person you aspire to be.

Kettlebell Lifting - The Ultimate 'Total Body' Workout!
Often described as 'the gym with a handle', the kettlebell is an amazingly versatile functional conditioning tool. In contrast to a standard dumbbell or barbell the weight is offset, which places greater emphasis on the core and stabilisers in order to control it.
Workout times are almost slashed in half when compared to standard resistance workouts because kettlebell training effectively stimulates both aerobic and anaerobic pathways together.
Regular kettlebell training can create a physique that’s symmetrically toned and firm, by quickly stripping away unwanted body fat and developing powerful/functional strength in the shoulders, chest, arms, legs, back, grip and core.
When comparing a typical kettlebell workout to a standard gym session, more calories are burned in half the time and it is considered by many fitness professionals as the ultimate tool for all-round 'shape changing' fitness.
E.S.K.K® Martial Arts & Fitness is proud to have the first and longest established kettlebell lifting club in West Cumbria and with our dedicated team of specialised coaches, you can be guaranteed of the very best in tuition for a safe and effective workout experience. We hold dedicated weekly beginner's sessions and group workout classes, plus special one-off 'correction' workshops so that even our most dedicated participants can hone their skills further.

Pilates - Develop Natural Strength, Endurance & Flexibility!
Throughout our lives our bodies change and adapt according to our activity levels and lifestyle. From a young age children are taught to ‘sit still’ whether they are at school or at home.
Parents and teachers often praise their children when they are sitting still as they relate it to good behaviour. Before we know it we are sitting still in an office in front of the computer, eight hours a day. Our bodies are no longer needed to perform the activities they once were required to do so it’s no wonder that our muscles tighten and we lose mobility.
Pilates focuses on core strength and stabilisation. It is a great way to help undo the damages caused over the years. Practising good movement will naturally help improve posture, mobility, and prevent or improve injuries by strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility and develop range of movement.
