Well done to everyone who stood up to be challenged at our karate grading today, and congratulations to those who were successful.
Over the course of the day, we were privileged to watch performances from 47 members, ranging from 5 to 58 years old and across all our kyu ranks from beginner to brown belt. Performances covered fundamental stances and hand/leg techniques, combinations, kata, bunkai, pad work, self-defence skills, and sparring. Everyone worked hard and gave it their all. For those who were unsuccessful, we hope that with our ongoing support, you will use this as a stepping stone to improve and re-test again in a few months' time. One thing is for certain - we are always proud of our members, and you all came away with our utmost respect. And the reward for all... Keiko, Keiko, Keiko! (practice, practice, practice) See you back in class soon!

Yesterday, a group of E.S.K.K. members, along with our chief instructor Chris Denwood, returned from another trip to Okinawa (the birthplace of karate) to undergo a period of intensive training, learning, and deepening our relationship with members at the Kyudokan Honbu.
Pictured above are Chris and his students with his Sensei, Higa Minoru Hanshi (10th Dan), and Higa Koyu Kyoshi (7th Dan) at the Izumizaki Dojo. In addition to regular karate training, the group also enjoyed weapons training in the form of Bo-Jutsu (staff fighting) methods with our friend, owner, and head teacher (kancho) at Asato Dojo, James Pankiewicz Sensei. Between training sessions, the trip was filled with plenty of sightseeing, cultural activities, and historical tours, with a little time for shopping included too. :) And of course, we can't forget all the incredible food... wow! This trip also marked 15 years since Chris first set foot on Okinawa to develop his understanding of karate—a journey that had a profound impact on him as both a martial artist and a person. We are very fortunate that Chris has since provided regular opportunities for E.S.K.K. members to experience for themselves the unique blend of training, history, culture, and people of such an incredible island. We are the only karate dojo here in Cumbria (and one of only a small handful in the UK) to teach authentic Okinawan Dento (traditional) Karate, with direct tuition from its source. We are proud of our art and passionate about sharing its numerous benefits with members of the community from all walks of life. If you or your child is interested in joining us, then please feel free to book a free taster session. We have weekly classes available in Whitehaven, Workington, Egremont, Cockermouth and Cleator Moor... |
