After the success of our first members workshop of 2024 back in February, this second special workshop of the year will focus on an aspect of old-style karate called 'Tuidi'...
Tuidi is the Okinawan dialect word for 'seizing hands' and generally refers to grappling and attacking the opponents joints, either to cause injury or for immobilisation/pain compliance. In Japanese, these techniques are called 'Kansetsu Waza'.
The workshop will cover...
- Introduction to Tuidi and key points for safe practice.
- Where Tuidi sits in karate's combative framework.
- The realities of joint attacks for modern-day self-defence.
- The inherent strengths and weaknesses of the human body.
- How the joints of the arm may be exploited using 3D mechanics.
- Tuidi techniques to attack the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders.
- Examples of where Tuidi exists in karate kata.
- How to seamlessly flow between tuidi techniques against the opponent's tendency to naturally resist.
We will finish with a summary of techniques covered, plus a short Q&A session.
This workshop is highly recommended for all adult and teen dojo members (12-years and up) to help supplement their regular curriculum training.
Hope to see you there!
